It is unusual to read something that is really original in children's literature but Ravenwood ticks all the boxes. It is exciting, full of danger, great characters and emotionally satisfying. Set in a world of trees, high above the ground, Arborium is home to thousands of people. At the bottom of the hierarchy are the people who keep the drains unblocked, including apprentice Ark. Ark and his family are poor and his father is too ill to work, so they are all dependent on this young boy, whom they adopted in mysterious circumstances.
Arborium is under threat from the people of Maw and Ark leads the fight against a plot to kill the king. He meets many strange people and creatures along the way and there is real tragedy and suffering before the battle is over. Lovely writing, without being sickly sweet and a great finish with enough loose ends to leave room for the sequel (or sequels). I hope this is the beginning of a series, it would be well worth it.
