I've read the first and second books in the Firebringer series, enjoying them thoroughly, but was massively disappointed when it came to the third and final installment.
I get the feeling that Miss Pierce got a bit bored of Jan as he is mostly sidelined for the duration of the story. There seemed to be a lot of wangst going on with him which led to a lot of skimreading on my part.
That said, scooching him out of the way brings some MUCH more interesting characters into play. Illishar the gryphon and Lell, Jan's younger sister alongside Tek -who gets her regal on in the final battle and kicks some major wyrmtail. Tek is my hero.
Also we get introduced to the Plains Unicorns who -up until now- have been portrayed as a slightly wilder more unruly version of the Vale unicorns. I was expecting them to be the Native American Tribe to the Vale unicorns' Pilgrims.
Not so, they came across more waste of space hippy than wild and free.
Overall, i was left with the desire to slap most of the characters in the face with a plus five mace of STFU.
Not to mention the whole family drama sub-plot that went on between Jan, his parents and his wife. The resolution of which had me flipping the book and the table.
Sanctimonious horse witch, mutter, mutter...
All in all, not a great addition to the series but alright to read if you want to know how it ends.
