This review is from: Special Moves (Audio CD)
You have to love them don't you? I'm surprised how few reviews there are for their previous albums, I would have thought that their extensive fan base would have ensured loads of positive feedback - or are they/we(the fans) just too cool for that?
Nevertheless Mogwai have built up a solid back catalogue and a lot of it is displayed herein. The included DVD is a record of the concert - and is a tad arty farty to be honest but this is what they do, moody exciting music that reaches across artistic boundaries. I mean the Zidane thing was just so crazy it really worked, but in many ways this album is a conventional live "best of" given the added twist of having been filmed and presented in this way. No real surprises then, this is one for the fans.

'The included DVD is a record of the concert - and is a tad arty farty to be honest'

I am yet to see the DVD (order from Amazon dispatched today) but I already know that I'll be agreeing with your viewpoint. The reason?: Mr Vincent Moon, who has the remarkable ability to make any music film overly arty (see recent efforts pertaining to Mogwai & The National). I personally love seeing an artistic vision and am by no means a philistine but Vincent Moon is one of my most hated film makers around, he seems to suck all the life out of any given project and instill it with various 'oh-so-clever-look-at-me' style shots & colour schemes.

For an example as to how art can be applied to a music video, take a look at the recent Animal Collective DVD 'Oddsac'. Director Danny Perez infuses the music with wonderous visuals to create a dramatic and intoxicating head****.
