the performances here are marvellous and the recording excellent too. The works themselves, with the possible exception of the Overture on Hebrew Themes, are comparatively rarely performed.
Both Prokofiev's Quintet and the Hindemith Octet have the feel of a serenade suite albeit with their own musical accents. Hindemith's Octet has a similar sound to Schoenberg's First Chamber Symphony without the late romantic baggage. Prokofiev's Quintet carries the combination of his lyrical and more astringent earlier music. Though neither are performed regularly they are fine works in their own right.
The Overture on Hebrew Themes is in are more accessible style than the Quintet and this chamber version is I think preferrable to the alternative orchestral one.
Overall this is a very attractive package with at a remarkable budget price. Highly recommended.
