New look with plastic tiles but the same game we all love,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Scrabble Original Board Game (Toy)
Every year I surprise my husband with a new item for the games chest, this year it's Scrabble. I wrapped it, my husband opened it and we played several games after Christmas Lunch. Glad I bought it, it's the same old game even though the look is radically different to the familiar game set from our much younger days.
I have to be honest I wasn't keen on the new look and wanted the old familiar red. Oh well, couldn't find it so I ordered this. Also, the photograph is a little confusing as the grid looks raised in the snap and it definitely is not raised in real life.
On opening the box lid, we found four moulded green plastic tile trays, the ivory plastic tiles in a plastic bag, a generously sized cloth bag with a drawstring, a sheet of paper (instructions), and of course the game board which is still a centre fold-over cardboard now sporting a green colour scheme - trust me you get used it quickly.
The tile trays are made from a stout, stiff plastic and don't tip or 'skitter' around when arranging tiles. The tiles are a sturdy, thick plastic (sigh, there just was something about those wooden tiles!) with a curious indentation underneath. The new style tiles do seem to stay on the board better than the old wood ones did even though the grid isn't raised. I bought the wood turntable to go with this new set and when the cat jumped up on the table (several times, sigh, and he got a bit of fun spinning the board too, lol) his jostling didn't send the tiles flying.
The game instructions are presented as a double-sided sheet of paper that is very basic - lol, just the facts, er, rules. The basic instructions do cover those scoring confusions (can I score on a double twice, etc) and it's an easy read-find to get started if it's been a while since last played. The cloth bag makes jumbling the tiles so much easier, what a brilliant update that is! It doubles as a storage bag when not playing so it will keep the tile loss down too.
We flattened the packaging dividers in the box bottom and so can get the turntable, trays, bag of tiles, instructions, and game board stowed neatly into the box when we were Scrabbled out for the evening.
All in even though I would have preferred the old red game set with wooden tiles I'm happy with the set. The add-on turntable makes it that much nicer so if you're considering the game set, splash out for the turntable as well - pretty sure you'll be glad you did if you play a lot of Scrabble.
