A deeply chilling film with great performances,
This review is from: 1408 - Director's Cut Edition [DVD] (DVD)
The main character played by John Cusack is a writer who specialises in haunted houses and investigating ghosts. Despite his subject matter he is skeptical and does not really believe in them himself. He then reads a postcard with a room number 1408 at the dolphin hotel. He tries to book a room but at first is refused, until he manages to get his lawyers to force the hotel to offer them the room.
As soon as he enters the hotel room itself things seem odd. The thermostat is broken, the alarm clock radio keeps turning on and he gets strange phone calls. The real fun kicks in when he has spent time in the room as things start to unravel and everything he believed comes into question.
John Cusack is mesmerising as the main character and is a joy to watch. He has a great sarcastic tone which really works as this writer character. There is also the hotel manager who is played by Samuel L Jackson. While he is only in the film for a fairly brief time he has a big impact on the main character and his scenes are also great to watch. There are many good actors in this film and fantastic special effects.
If you like Stephen King's stories or anything related to haunted places then you will enjoy this film.
