2.0 out of 5 stars Revised opinion - still watered down, 29 Mar. 2011
This review is from: Crysis 2 - Limited Edition (PC DVD) (DVD-ROM)
Crysis, Crysis Warhead and Crysis Wars felt like Crytek games, they were beautiful without being garish, offering balanced missions (single player) and very good multiplayer. I had high hopes for this game, but after going through it...those hopes have been dashed.

What seems to have happened is that EA picked the guys who made Modern Warfare and told them to go and tell Crytek how to make their next game. This is very much a beginner's game, with no depth or strategy involved whatsoever (aside from cloak, fire, cloak, fire, cloak etc). Everything about it reeks of lowest-common-denominator, rather than appealing to the fans that bought the first game, they have sought to appeal to a broader spectrum of FPS fans and so we are left with an undeniably weak product.

Graphically a lot of the effects are quite pretty, but being DX9 does hinder those of us who have powerful enough systems to want to see more. That said, an apocalyptic cityscape is never going to be as aesthetically pleasing as the Lingshan islands were in the first game.

If only this wasn't a Crysis game. If this were a standalone expansion, it might be forgiveable. As it is, unless something dramatic happens, Crysis is now dead in the water.

Update: 08/04/2011

This is actually not a bad game, if it didn't carry the Crysis name it'd probably be lauded for being a good romp through New York City. Graphically a lot of short-cuts are taken, but stylistically it's quite tight and everything looks consistent with the theme. You just feel that there could have been so much more to enjoy, visually.

Gameplay-wise it's fun, if quickly mastered, and is basically Crysis 2: Modern Warfare. Everything is on rails, but that is not such a bad thing as it makes you feel like part of a sci-fi action movie. I don't regret buying it, I just wish it had lived up to the quality of it's predecessor.
