A beautifully written novel. I warmed to the two main characters, Sam and Jess, immediately, separated as they are by almost 100 years. I am a big fan of any fiction set around the time of the First World War, so this was an added bonus. The story drew me in and held me throughout. At times it was deeply affecting psychologically. Susan Gandar has wonderful descriptive powers, as well as a very fine ear for naturalistic dialogue. I understand she has also worked on television scripts, and this is no wonder at all!
I love how the two narratives interweave, and the tension is kept up throughout; and therefore proves to be dramatically most satisfying. The horror of warfare and its attendant loss of life is made palpable. This is a writer who clearly understands her craft deeply, and how to tell a convincing, and emotionally engaging story. I recommend it highly!
