This review is from: Rodgers & Hammerstein at the Movies (Audio CD)
John Wilson is a phenomenon and his Proms concerts have been unforgettable.
I have heard that John Wilson has said that with this disc he hoped to get back to the original "theatre" sound, rather than the "Studio" sound that characterized the film soundtracks of these great shows. He certainly achieves his objective and the sound is tight, hard and authentic as a representation of a crack theatre orchestra. Having overcome my initial disappointment that this was not a glossy, big-band sound, I do love what the artists have achieved.
The problem is that EMI have labelled this as "Rogers and Hammerstein at the Movies", which it manifestly isn't and which raises a false expectation that remains un-fulfilled.
So, one star for another piece of dumb marketing from EMI and five stars for the performers.

John Wilson planned this R&H project to feature the arrangements from the film versions of the musicals. Hence the billing "At the Movies".
