Wig Wam Bam!,
This review is from: Maniac [DVD] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Frank Zito is completely mental and goes around murdering women by neon light, on the sleazy streets of New York, before going home and adorning his 'girlfriend's' (mannequins) heads with their scalps...
Over the years, this bad boy has been one of my all time favourite slasher movies. Forget teeny rubbish like Friday the 13th, or even worse, the more modern day body counters, like the 'self aware, aren't we clever' Scream franchise, or the 'so dumb it's fun' series's like Hatchet, this movie rains all over their parade with a torrential downpour of blood flecked urine!
With very little plot, Maniac moves from one extremely seedy and violent set piece to the next, with Spinell on top form as the wheezing sickopath Frank Zito, scalping his way through New York's fairer sex.
Lustig did a really good job with this and the New York flavour he catches is as distasteful as anything you'll consume in say Taxi Driver, with an almost draining and unrelenting atmosphere of grim mother fixated, abandonment issued butchery. Which somehow seems almost as pornographic as it is bloody.
The gore FX work by Savini is up there with his best, along with the stuff he did in Rosemary's Killer and Day of the Dead etc.
But if you're just cutting your teeth in the world of the slasher, this may not be your best film to start with, as apparently Maniac still has the power to repulse and shock ~ when I showed this to a mate who'd never seen it before very recently, his jaw nearly hit the floor during the 'shotgun' sequence.
An under appreciated classic!
The print on review is the Elite Reg 1 disc, which contains an Audio commentary with Savini & Lustig, trailers, tv spots, a deleted scene and Promo footage for the never released Maniac II: Mister Robbie.
