Good TV series, shame about this book,

This review is from: The Western Front (Hardcover)
Holmes is a good presenter of TV but this spin-off book from his BBC series about the Western Front leaves a lot to be desired. It is quick on detail passing over many great event in a single sentence and is a bit of a bore to read also. Holmes is very defensive of his work and actively rubbishes other WW1 historians in this book which I believe detracts from the issue on hand. Basically this is a book for a dilettante, a sort of 'Bluff your way into World War One'. It is a summary of the Western Front, going into detail on some areas and leaving other parts out completely. A good introductary text, good for a young student perhaps or someone out to gain general facts about The Western Front but not for hardened academic or amateur historian. Best to use this book as an accompaniment to the TV series which is probably what Mr Holmes had in mind when he penned it.
