just bought "magic thread" this week after reading the other amazon review + loving some of his later work ("sakura", "grinning cat", "the boy + the tree" (but NOT "love or die" which is shockingly mundane..) and pleased to find that this is another fine, characteristically otherworldly album from Yokota.
released back in 1998 : "magic thread" is pretty contempraneous with uber-minimal/click electronica labels such as mille plateau or raster-noton + sound artists such as noted minimalist heads as plastikman, gas , alvo noto + farben . what sets "magic thread " apart for me is Yokota's obvious close affinity with discreet oriental sounds + layering in between the clicks + dark minimal beats making this both a late night deep music experience that on at least two of the tracks- would appeal to the deep click-house heads as well as more "out there" experimental electronica heads . there's nothing here that really stands out -but this makes "magic thread" a great full Lp's listen, as is better listened to as such.
yep - strongly recommended for experimental minimal/ambient/electronica heads.
