I came to Myke Bartlett through his Salmon & Dusk podcasts, and was sufficiently impressed by them to pay for his first 'proper' novel.
Fire in the Sea shares some of the same elements - a dark tone, likeable and not over-perfect characters, a page-turning plot and wide imagination.
Some writing with fantasy elements turns me off, because it seems there are no rules and anything might be possible with a flick of the author's pen when convenient. Myke manages to avoid this, and keeps the story feeling gritty and real. Well, perhaps not that gritty - this is YA fiction after all, but grounded in reality.
An enjoyable morsel that I consumed in a couple of days. Looking foward to the sequel.
