Dubstep was a sound I always appreciated but being a house/techno head there was much in my preferred genre to keep me busy. Now dubstep is definitely a relative of techno, even if it is a second cousin twice removed and the sound has been gravitating in an even more techno orientated direction. Cross over was inevitable and now it's common to find dubstep elements to techno mixes, like on Surgeon's Fabric mix, Burial tracks have found there way into many techno sets and from the other side Ben UFO's FabricLive mix included pure techno tracks as did Pangaea's. I also found Mary Ann Hobbs' dubstep show of a few years back pretty inspiring, the music gave a similar excitement to the early Acid House days. It has reached a point where I'm now familiar and appreciative without really knowing what to buy so like many who are curious I turn to the compilation as a way in.
I knew Skream as a repeated contributor to the Dub Step All Stars series and found his stuff consistently good. This compilation has a few of his tunes included, they are the highlights for me but there's no denying this is a good mix that maintains quality. The mainstream dub step sound is dominant although there are nods to raga and drum and bass. Nothing much in a techno vein but then I reckon this mix is about 5 years old now and I'm enjoying playing catch up. It's pleasurable enough to make me investigate further and I will be checking his more recent releases in the near future.
