This review is from: The Early Years (Audio CD)
How good were Roxy's early years? Remarkably good indeed.Their first three albums, especially the first two with Eno throttling an early synth, were soundscapes of weird jarring beauty.
I am very ashamed to admit that Roxy were just a little too bizzare for me as a kid. Whilst i had no difficulty in worshipping at the shrine of Bowie, my young and blinkered mind struggled with the strange noises these oddly dressed alien beings produced (It was extensively rumoured at the time that Eno was not from this planet, and, given his very peculiar looks, i almost believed it).
Anyway, it took me a good few years before i was introduced to Roxy's early recordings and, by the time i was, Roxy music had unfortunately drifted comfortably into mainstream MOR chart success.
Everyone should own 'Roxy Music', 'For your pleasure' and 'Stranded',they are Roxy Music's darkest, creative and most inventive works. It is from these three albums that the tracks for 'The early years' are culled so if you are moved by the contents of this disc then you will undoubtedly adore the albums from whence they came.
Ferry's vocals are very stylised but far less mannered than they were to be from 'Country life' onwards. There is an edginess to the bands playing, lots of striking and startling fractured notes, which are still present on 'Stranded' to a degree but are beginning to tail off in the mix.
Just listen to 'Ladytron', 'Chance meeting' 'The bogus man' 'remake/remodel' 'Song for Europe' then try and age these tracks. It is almost impossible to do, they are so unceasingly unique. The creative use of all the instruments is astounding but especially the oboe, the sax and of course Eno's synthesizers and his "treatment" of the other instruments.
There is not a poor track on this album, in fact i would go as far as to say that this is one of the best compilations on the market. The sleeve is gorgeous and the pictures of glam era Roxy are superb:Ferry in eyeliner, Eno in ostrich feathers. The music inside is timeless, exciting and captivating. We will certainly never see their like again.
