One of the best zombie films ever made,
This review is from: Resident Evil - Apocalypse [DVD] (DVD)
While Films like 28 Days Later do have some great moments, and films like 28 Weeks later pull the zombie outbreak madness very nicely, and films like World War Z do take on the international side of a worldwide zombie outbreak, I have to say that Resident Evil Apocalypse is pretty much the only film in existence that shows how a single city suffers a zombie apocalypse.
The story is about the t-virus getting out of the Umbrella Corporation lab that was the main setting for the original Resident Evil film. So while in the previous film, sterile lab environments, cargo bays, cramped maintenance passages and office cubicles were the setting, it is an urban metropolis in Resident Evil: Apocalypse. The film has all the ingredients of a zombie classic: a bustling city waiting to descend into chaos, a team of spec ops forces aboard a helicopter, Umbrella Corp's agents who seal off the city, people trapped in high rise buildings, survivors boarding themselves up in stores, police firing at zombies in the streets, and then of course you have the Nemesis and his minigun and rocket launcher. This time around, Alice is armed to the teeth, and we have a ragtag band of survivors including a wounded cop, a reporter and the beautiful Sienna Guillory playing officer Jill Valentine. The film is also filled with classic locations: the bridge leading out of the city, a church, a graveyard, a school, a police station, etc.
This is the best film in the entire series, in my opinion. It has just the right mix to remain awesome from beginning till end. Granted, it isn't as scary as the original Resident Evil, but then again it is more action oriented than being a horror movie. And yet, you have the apocalyptic setting going on perfectly. A solid four, out of five.
