beautiful and evocative,
This review is from: A Time of Gifts: On Foot to Constantinople: from the Hook of Holland to the Middle Danube (Paperback)
This is a wonderdul account of a jouney across 1930s Europe on foot by a young man. It beautifully evokes the towns and countryside and the people he meets. You get the feeling that Europe was much more diverse than it is now, people having led lives more rooted in one place. He also meets very generus and warm hospitality and help along the way and has his fair share of adventures. I want to read the next installment now.
