I can thoroughly recommend this book to kids (and their grown ups) everywhere! It's got a great selection of recipes in - I like that there are basic recipes for things like a basic tomato pasta sauce, which then can be used as the base of more advanced recipes further on in the book. It's a really well planned out book - with lots of tips and warnings (for when you need an adult to help - with either sharp objects or hot things, for example). The recipes are fun - I love the paper bag breakfast!! - and practical too - this book will make any child a great little cook. I especially like the little facts - explaining the science bit of cooking (I always thought cooking would be much easier if you knew why certain things react with each other, or why things are done in a particular order).
This book isn't just for kids who want to 'mess about' in the kitchen - this will really help them become a good all round cook. (I have to say, I have been tempted to give it to my 20 year old daughter, who has only just decided she wants to learn to cook!!!).
Schools don't seem to teach the basics any more, which is how I learnt to cook. In fact, I was horrified when my daughter came home with a list of things she needed to make an apple pie and it was a pack of fresh or frozen pastry and a tin of pie filling!! I think Jamie Oliver needs to tackle that problem rather than school dinners! This book will ensure that children can cook the basics, safely and then progress and experiment to make more difficult meals.
