Decent hard working French Nationals being rounded up for the 'crime' of being Jewish and treated inhumanely thereafter, this is the main theme of the film. One can't help thinking of the old saying "All it takes for evil to happen is for good men to do nothing."
Th true horror of underfed, unwashed people kept in disgusting conditions is barely imaginable and cannot be represented accurately by any film. The young actors are superb, but their healthy expressive little faces can be nothing like the the semi-starved, terrified, hollow-eyed faces of the actual victims.
We need films like this one to remind us to keep on our guard, always, against the evil of racism.
