5.0 out of 5 stars Real gold - laser inscriptions - what more can a budding Frodo want, 26 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The One Ring (gold-plated) Lord Of The Rings The Noble Collection (Jewellery)
There are lots of 'tat' rings out there - and when you receive them they can disappoint. this one doesnt. Only word of caution, gold is a 'soft' metal that never ever tarnishes, whilst the chain is a 'hard' metal that may wear away the gold plating, so you may wish to wear the ring on a finger or toe rather than wear it as a pendant. Also bear in mind that this ring is a gold plated accurate replica, whereas the 'one ring that rules them all' is made of uranium, which is why it burns Frodo. If you accidentally receive the 'one ring' then my advice would be to avoid touching it and summon Gandalf - he will know what to do!

You do not summon a Wizard! A Wizard arrives precisely when he means to!

Ok, so why does the ring not burn anyone else when they wear it or even hold it if it's made of uranium?

The short answer is the radiation emitted from `the one ring' DOES cause issues - but it takes TIME and PROLONGED PHYSICAL CONTACT. This is made abundantly clear by what happened to all of the other `caretakers' who `possessed' the ring.

Gollum was a HOBBIT who slowly became CORRUPTED by the `ever shining ring that glows brighter than gold' - as expressed and seen in his PHYSICAL DEFORMITIES and his devious cunning cloying demeanour as the ring's `power' overwhelms him.

This exact same devious, cunning, possessive behaviour is exhibited by SMAUG - who collects GOLD - and the COVETOUSNESS is also by exhibited by THORIN when he sees the vast wealth that Smaug has gathered - and wishes to POSSES it all for HIMSELF - which causes BIG problems that fuels `The battle of the five armies' - as each WAR LORD use Thorins AVARICE as an excuse to SEIZE POWER until events eventually bring Thorin to his senses and all is resolved until Bilbo returns to the SHIRE - where he must combat MORE evil deeds - this time STANDING ALONE on his OWN against SAURON.

Both Gollum and Bilbo APPEAR to be impervious to the `power of the ring' because THEY do not HANDLE the ring to any large extent - Gollum keeping it under a STONE by the underground lake where he resides living on a diet of fish and goblin - and Bilbo in his POCKETSES until he has need to WEAR it for very short intervals of time - and later in his `safe place' (in a leaden box stowed in a chest) when he returns from his adventure - so the ring is momentarily `out of harms way'.

But they are NOT impervious to the radiation - as we see by the horrendous deformities that happened to GOLLUM - and again exhibited by FRODO who is in PERMANENT CONTACT with the ring (he wears it next to his skin on a chain suspended around his neck) - and we see it again when Bilbo joins the ELVES to sail out to sea on a SHIP - a ship that does not have any PROVISIONS on board because the ship is to be SCUPPERED in the middle of the ocean to destroy EVERYTHING and EVERYONE on board - the ELVES desiring this because they have decided that their QUEST on `middle' Earth is finished - and staying around does not serve any purpose - and BILBO electing to join them because - although he puts on a brave `public face' - Bilbo is riddled with CANCER - cancer that brings him excruciating pain - and he does not wish to continue a long long life of MISERY.

For completeness, the ALLEGORIES are all about THE FIRST WORLD WAR and THE SECOND WORLD WAR - with BILBO representing BRITAIN - and Bilbo's COUSIN Frodo - along with GANDALF - representing AMERICA (Gandalf is a `late arrival' who turns up with a HUGE army at HELMS DEEP in their `hour of need' and helps to win the day - as well as arranging FOOD SUPPLIES across `dangerous and deadly territory' to prevent the SEIGE that enemy had inflicted so as to `starve the people out') and the SEMIOLOGIES in the LOCATIONS - Rivendell; Gondor; Mordor (read MURDER) et al; SWORDS - Sting et al; the ARMOURMENTS; the modes of TRANSPORT; the METHOD of attack - BATS being VERY significant - think BLITZSCREIG (lightening strike) - and of course the RINGS (and much else besides) - ALL have their OWN messages `HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT' - the `one ring' representing the FUEL for the NUCLEAR BOMBS that were required to stem the ATROCITIES and DEATH CAMPS once and for all - the others representing the POWER and WEALTH of the DYNASTIES such as the Ottoman Empire!

ASIDE: It will be interesting to see how Peter Jackson portrays the final part of `The Hobbit' (The battle of the five armies) in his wonderful cinematic realisations of Tolkien's masterwork. Will he show Smaug (Hitler) `torching' the lonely little island of LAKETOWN (Britain) in spite and vengeance as he seeks out its GOLD (The desolation of Smaug)? Will he show how the GREED of Thorin (Keiser Wilhelm) fuels a restless and divided people to fight a pointless war - a destructive war that costs many lives - but does not serve any purpose or achieve anything - as well as depict the CONSEQUENCE of his pompous actions (my army is bigger than yours so I will win) - or will Jackson simply depict how SMAUG was overthrown and defeated - and leave it at that? The final part of this epic (people's journey) tale is due out soon - so we will find out!

ALL atoms have a NUCLEUS that gives the atom its MASS; a SPECIFIC number of PROTONS that define the LATTICE of the atom (gas; liquid; solid; or plasma) - giving the atom it's ATOMIC NUMBER in the `Periodic Table' - and the SAME number of ELECTRONS that orbit in and around the lattice - which define the atoms PERSONALITY - acidic; alkaline; voltaic; photosensitive; inert until roused; or `noble and inert' (i.e. the NOBLE gasses - neon etc.) no matter WHAT you throw at it.

AURORA (bringer of light and hope - which has the COMMON name `gold') - shortened to `AU' in the periodic table - is the ONLY substance that does not DECAY (rust or rot if you will). URANIUM is one of the HEAVY ELEMENTS (Plutonium being another) that continuously converts its MASS into ENERGY until it eventually becomes LEAD - ALL other substances consist of ENERGY converted into MASS.

To close: MICHAEL FARADAY discovered the ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM - something that has EXISTED since the dawn of TIME; and CRICK and WATSON discovered DNA - the thing that forms almost ALL living things - again - something that has existed since the dawn of TIME.

I said `almost all' living things - to quantify - BACTEREOPHAGES are short strands of nucleic acid (fewer than ten genes) that of THEMSELVES cannot form life - but put one in a LIVING cell - and suddenly THAT cell spawns millions more BACTEREOPHAGES - which then EAT the cell and then drill into the next cell - and the next - and the next - you get the idea - until the HOST carrying the BACTEREOPHAG experiences a slow VIOLENT death!!

The name for this strange phenomena is VIRUS - and these include flu; the common cold; yellow fever; smallpox; rabies; polio; encephalitis lethargica; AIDS; and EBOLA.

Thankfully, some have momentarily DISAPPEARED (encephalitis lethargica being one of them); and for others we have developed VACCINES to PREVENT contamination.

I found your question to be quite fascinating and very interesting and I hope my reply has not bored you.

Thanks for asking it - and happy and continuous study of the masterworks of J R R Tolkien that are `The Hobbit' and `The Lord of the rings'.

ASIDE: The jury is still `out' on `The Silmarillion' - the work cobbled together by Tolkien's son after Tolkien's death - and I am one of those who does not believe this `puzzle with many solutions' is CURRENTLY constructed how it is SUPPOSED to be assembled - but THAT dear reader is for another day!

When I read your comment `You do not summon a Wizard! A Wizard arrives precisely when he means to' I fell about laughing so much that I spilt my tea and almost wet myself. Your clever comment has so many layers to it - and the more I read it - the more I laugh.

It is difficult to determine if you have missed the point of Gandalf's remark - a remark he made as a `front' so as to `justify' his reason why he had turned up `unexpectedly' in Hobbiton, so as not to draw too much attention to the REAL purpose of his presence because he `sticks out like a sore thumb' and because of who he is (and REALLY represents of course) gossip would be rife; or whether you are drawing attention to the fact that many people READING the masterwork for the FIRST time fail to see the major significance of this apparently innocent comment - because they TOO are `fooled' - just as Bilbo and the townspeople are - which is what Gandalf wants of course; or whether you are `nudging' the readers to `look deeper' into WHY Gandalf passed the remark - because all is NOT what it seems; or whether you are drawing attention to the fact that Gandalf WAS summoned - and the summons was delivered to Gandalf by Radegast to attend a SECRET meeting at `The great council' - and was SENT to Hobbiton for reasons that later become apparent; or whether you are alluding to the `giveaway' that many people `miss' in the comment `A wizard arrives precisely when he MEANS (has CAUSE) to' - a `giveaway' that almost `blows his cover' ; or did you make the comment to show the REALITY - the fact that Gandalf brought FIREWORKS (ordinance) - which are used both as an ALLEGORY to indicate `sparks will fly' and we will go to war if required if you do not `back down' - and also as a METAPHOR to loudly send out his message far and wide - we are ARMED - and we are in a state of PREPAREDNESS.

Thank you for your comment - it is not only a very enjoyable observation - it is also highly thought-provoking - as ALL of these seemingly innocent `Tolky' remarks prove to be (which is the genius of Tolkien of course) - just like the `riddles' as they take on significant `double-meanings' in `The Hobbit' - and also in the classic Roberto Benigni `must see' film `LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL' (now fully restored and available on BluRay) - a stunning masterwork that VIVIDLY depicts the SAME horrors that Tolkien spells out in HIS masterworks.

And speaking of `preparedness' - should you choose to watch Roberto Benigni's classic film BE PREPARED - `Life is beautiful' is NOT for the squeamish!

Have a great day.

Life is Beautiful
