I was seduced into buying this book by the fantastic cover art and whimsical somewhat fairytale summary on the back and I have to say that I was not disappointed; despite a bit of a slow start this was a terrific read and I can't wait to see what else this author comes up with.
Truly Plaice is your not-so-averaged sized heroine with a heart to match. What a wonderful character Baker has created! Throw in some `witchcraft' from the past, a dash of romance and a most unlikeable, deceiving doctor who puts Truly through hell and you have what is in essence a compelling story.
A brief summary: after her mother dies during childbirth and she grows up in the shadow of her beautiful, perfect sister, Truly begins to realise that she isn't quite like other girls in Aberdeen County. For a start: she's huge- `a little giant' as her snotty school teacher dubs her. Also, she's not exactly pretty, which doesn't bode well for those around her with their small town attitudes, particularly her schoolmates who subject her to taunts and bullying or else ignore her entirely. Still, she tries to get by and get by she most certainly does- this is a real story of overcoming adversity, family secrets and intrigue. I don't want to say too much for fear of giving anything away- I just recommend that you go and buy it- right now!
