This review is from: Totally Mad 60 Years of Humor, Satire, Stupidity and Stupidity (Hardcover)
What a beautiful anniversary book. This is a large format, glossy and wonderfully reproduced collection from the past sixty years of one of America's most important and entertaining magazines. This contains very little behind-the-scenes history so if your looking for an oral nothing-spared history you may be disappointed but this should really please fans and casual readers as it is packed with illustrations. The book is arranged chronologically with reprints of every cover from the past sixty years running across the bottom of the pages while each page includes a 'sample' page or two from most issues whether it be the parodies of film and TV shoes, cartoons, strips, jokes, fold-ins or whatever. This also works as a mirror of pop-culture in America over the past six years as just about everything that became popular was soon (very soon) mocked in the pages of MAD so you can see each major event in entertainment from Batman (1966) to the dark Knight or Star Wars (1977 -twice!) to the star Wars prequels as well as politics and all manor of fads and fashions. Highly recommended. The only criticism could be that as the pages are merely samples or 'clips' from each major issue you'll be left wanting more.
