This cd harks back to an era when boy bands routinely wrote their own material and played their own instruments. Nowadays 'Busted' represent the logical successors to this genre. In their day, Haircut One Hundred were seen as a throwaway pop band. The songs in 'Pelican West' are split neatly into two styles. Snappy 60's influenced 3 minute pop gems and compact speedy snippets of early 80's Brit - funk. The frontman, Nick Heyward was at the time seen as the archetypal toothy boy next door, but there was obviously a bit more to him as all the songs were written by him. He was also more than willing to muck in and took a large share of the guitar playing responsibilities. As most of the songs are guitar driven, this is by far no mean feat. This is feel good, comfort pop at its best. My personal favourite song is 'Snow Girl'. Good thing as well is this still sounds remarkably fresh. So take a listen and enjoy.
