This book had it all for me - a period of Irish history that I wanted to know more about, central characters with whom I could empathise and a great intertwining of real and fictional characters that frequently had me Googling for more background. Both in Dublin and Danzig, it was easy to feel you were there with them.
I would add that I normally retain a degree of detachment from what I am reading - at the end of the day its only fiction, isn't it - but on more than one occasion, I was feeling angry with the abuses of power portrayed in the book. That is testimony to how credible and realistic those scenarios were painted.
Needless to say, I've just bought the sequel, City of Strangers and am looking forward to another good read.
