This review is from: Super Mario 3D World (Nintendo Wii U) (Video Game)
When Super Mario 3D World was shown at E3 many people, myself included, were sceptical. Was this simply a rushed sequel to the rather good (but not fantastic) Super Mario 3D Land, on the 3DS? It looked like a last minute port to help quell the Wii U's massive (and unfortunately continuous) issue of not having enough games.
Yet months later, we are once again reminded that nobody should really doubt Nintendo when it comes to making video games. From the second the opening cutscene ends you are already smiling. It just looks gorgeous.
Mario has taken a long time to catch up to his rivals, finally on an adventure in HD with beautiful, vibrant visuals throughout. New power ups, such as the cat suit, add new variety to a tried and tested formula. The level design, too, takes lead from the tremendous Galaxy series of games found on the Wii. Just when you get used to a new mechanic or enemy, everything is changed up and something new is introduced. Each character players a little differently; Peach can float, Luigi's more slippery and has a little boost to his jump and Mario..well, he's Mario! It's nice to see Peach actually be a playable character this time around, as opposed to simply being kidnapped.
Up to 4 players can join in the fun in local co-op play. I love seeing couch co-op be implemented still, but it is a mystery as to why we are still missing proper online functionality. Not everyone is fortunate enough to live close to their friends and loved ones. Microsoft and Sony have understood this since as early as 2002, why are Nintendo still struggling to see the appeal?
Despite that small oversight, Nintendo has once again proved to the world that it knows how to make a fantastic, whimsical adventure and cram it into a £40 disc. This is exactly what the Wii U needed a year ago on release. Whether it will be the consoles saving grace remains to be seen, but right now, that doesn't matter. All that matters is that this is one of the greatest Mario titles ever to be released.
