After attempting and ditching The Shining while in my early teens, only in the past couple of years have I begun to delve into the works of Stephen King, albeit his Dark Tower sequence, Under The Dome and his collected shorter fiction. Not having much of an attachment to his early horror roots like some fans who have complained about this novella; I really enjoyed it.
Stephanie, a college intern at a small newspaper based on a small Maine island, is related the tale of The Colorado Kid by the two elderly island natives who run The Weekly Islander. The body of a John Doe is found on the shores of the island years before and present a true unexplained mystery which initially stumps all involved until a breakthrough in the case reveals more...
It feels like most of the grumbling about the book comes from it's open ending but I feel it works very well here in encouraging the reader's own imagination and conclusions. It's not a long read (I finished it in an evening), but a compelling one nonetheless!
