Customer Review

on 4 November 2013
Woody Shaw's Blackstone Legacy was made by Woody with several of Miles DAvis' sidesmen from the Bitches' Brew era. This album sounds as if they needed to let off steam - and they produced the most powerful flowing jazz album you will ever hear. If you like 70s jazz, then don't deliberate, just buy it. The title track, the first on the CD, is the best. It is much in the style of Mile's Miles In The Sky, and it will leave you breathless in admiration and delight. How could they be so good? The second track, Think on Me, is a slower number, and the third, Lost and Found, is particularly frantic and continues where the title track left off. The fourth, New World, starts off as a piece of Quincy Jones style funk, which dissolves slowly into a general jam highlightimg the skills of the whole band in turn. The fifth track, Boo-Ann's Gran is a piece of very pleasurable mainstream swing which shows off the two saxophonists, Bartz and Maupin to good effect and is the best example of them working together. Unfortuunately the final track, A Deed For Dolphy, and happily the shortest, is a dreadful slow atonal dirge which the album would have been better without, however even so this work has to be the most powerful 70 minutes of jazz you will ever hear; maybe not as experimental or rounded as Bitche's Brew, to which it is compared, but still presses every pleasurable button by just the right amount. I had the vinyl and wore it out, so it is particularly pleasing to be able to buy it again on CD
