1. You have to sit in ice cold baths for hours. Fact: the recommended temperature is 15-20 degrees celsius, for a maximum 15 minutes. A cool shower (max 3 minutes on cold) is also fine. (And the cold rinse is brilliant for your hair!) 2. You have to live on coffee. Fact: a cup of black coffee is recommended in the morning - but tea or another caffeinated drink is also fine. 3. You have to hit the gym instead of having breakfast. Fact: your daily exercise sessions can be anything you like that gets you moving - a brisk walk, energetic housework, cycle/walk to work, dance in the kitchen in your underwear, whatever is convenient. If you had a dog you wouldn't think twice about taking it for a walk first thing, so why not do the walk anyway! 4. You have to 'skip breakfast'. Fact: the book advises waiting for 1-3 hours after your morning exercise before eating. Get your exercise in early (which you have to do if you're at work or college) and you'll be eating mid-late morning. Call it brunch! You still have 3 meals a day. 5. The diet promotes anorexia. Fact: there is a whole chapter on the dangers of eating disorders. Any diet taken to excess (e.g. calorie counting or points systems) could be held to promote anorexia ('if 1000 calories is good, 500 is twice as good'). 6. You have to avoid fruit. Fact: up to three pieces of fruit per day are allowed, but preferably not in the evening.
I too thought this book was crazy, but, at 3 stone overweight and with a thyroid disorder, I realised my metabolism could hardly get more messed up than it was already. 5 days in and I already feel lighter, fitter and happier.
