I am a devout fan of Barbara Stanwyck. I doubt if there was a better, more adaptable actress than Miss Stanwyck. Certainly there were others who were every bit as good a she was, but none "better". I've read a couple of Jane Ellen Wayne's bio's,and found them to be sadly lacking, just as you did.
I have the following books "Starring Miss Barbara Stanwyck," written by Ella Smith that is more about her career than her private life, but well worth having, none the less. And Axel Madsen's "Stanwyck," which was an interesting biography. The best recollections of Stanwyck I have read came from Robert Wagner's autobiography,"Pieces of My Heart," he had a 4-5 year relationship which Miss Stanwyck which began after they co-starred together in Titanic.
Incidentally, I thought Wagner's book an absolute gem, in places it had me screaming with laughter. Hope this helps you !
