4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read, but lacking real substance...., 24 Jun. 2010
By
This review is from: The Life and Loves of Barbara Stanwyck (Hardcover)
I enjoyed reading this book about the very wonderful Barbara Stanwyck...It has an easy style and contains a great deal of useful information about her movies...it simply tells a story, without resorting to the use of scandalous gossip or hearsay.
But as much as I found it believable,I also sadly found it somewhat slight, lacking in real substance and not very in-depth concerning her personal life, never really managing to become the total sum of all its parts...Despite this,it is interesting enough stuff to hold the readers attention for the short time it takes to read it...but ultimately it left me wanting more than it has to offer...it still makes a good worthwhile bedtime read nonetheless.

I am a devout fan of Barbara Stanwyck. I doubt if there was a better, more adaptable actress than Miss Stanwyck. Certainly there were others who were every bit as good a she was, but none "better". I've read a couple of Jane Ellen Wayne's bio's,and found them to be sadly lacking, just as you did.
I have the following books "Starring Miss Barbara Stanwyck," written by Ella Smith that is more about her career than her private life, but well worth having, none the less. And Axel Madsen's "Stanwyck," which was an interesting biography. The best recollections of Stanwyck I have read came from Robert Wagner's autobiography,"Pieces of My Heart," he had a 4-5 year relationship which Miss Stanwyck which began after they co-starred together in Titanic.
Incidentally, I thought Wagner's book an absolute gem, in places it had me screaming with laughter. Hope this helps you !
