This review is from: The Jane Austen Book Club [DVD] (DVD)
In an otherwise predictable movie all too suitable for a wet, Sunday afternoon and all that that implies, Hugh Dancy's, slightly dappy and appealing performance is the star turn. There is not enough Austen and far too much of the, all too familiar, 'middle class women going through crises'.Whilst this is pretty true to life -ie every group of women I have met is full of divorce, infidelity, illness falling out of love, children problems etc etc, this film did not address the issue in any, novel or meaningful way - which was very disappointing. It IS, however, non-threatening and easy to watch and the inclusion of Hugh Dancy certainly gives the ladies something to look at because it is, definitely, a chick flick and most of the protagonists are rather beautiful women which is weighted in the wrong direction in the eye candy department. Give us 6 men talking about Austen and their problems and there you WOULD have a movie worth watching!
