I only finished this novel because it was a book group read. I found it to be a long, uninvolving trudge through what amounted to a technical manual strung together with manufactured paranoia. The characters were weak stereotypes and any emotional context was so distant as to be negligible. Consequently, I found it difficult to care about the eventual outcome. This novel has been shortlisted for a CWA Gold Dagger Award in 2012. I can only infer that this year must have been a poor year for crime writing if this represents one of the top four examples.
