changed my view of UFC forever,
This review is from: Ultimate Fighting Championship: 40 - Vendetta [VHS] (VHS Tape)
OK, before this event I was one of the unenlightened masses that still thought that the UFC was no-holds-barred talentless streetfighting in a cage. Then a friend lent me this video. I'm glad that UFC 40:Vendetta changed my opinion. It is in my view one of the most exciting, well put-together, classy fighting events I've ever seen (and this includes many recent televised boxing events). From the opening credits this event screams quality at you, and by the end of the event you'll be stunned, dazed and in awe of the fights put on for you here.
Five fights are on this video: Lawler vs Ghosn, Newton vs Spratt, Hughes vs Castillo, Lidell vs Sobrall, and the headliner bout... Tito Ortiz vs Ken Shamrock. Each of these fights are amazing and finish in a variety of different ways, each showcasing a different one of the many skills needed to compete in the octagon. Submissions, ground stoppages, standing knockouts... they're all here and they're all spectacular. As a long time boxing and Muay Thai fan some of the boxing and kicking I felt was amateurish, but since most of the fights ended up grappling on the ground then this isn't such a problem.
So I come to the final fight. WOW What a fight! Throughout the video we are shown the buildup to this grudge match of grudge matches, with interviews, prefight meetings, past fighting clips etc. Ortiz represents youth, aggression, and punk attitude. Shamrock represents experience, honour and never-say-die attitude. The fight turns out to be one of the best fights (not just UFC but boxing, kickboxing etc) I have seen. From the opening bell it is all action: boxing, grappling, pounding, clinchwork. Without giving too much away if you've never seen the fight suffice to say that by the end I was profoundly moved for these awesome warriors and their display of heart that they showed in this ring.
Bottom line. Whatever fighting sport you're interested in, give this a shot. It's amazing.
