Clear and accessible. A super book!,
This review is from: Family Photographs and How to Date Them (Family History) (Paperback)
Each decade from the 1850s to the 1940s is allocated a chapter in this excellent guide to dating family photographs. After a short introduction to the types of photographs and the styles of dress, the majority of each chapter is given over to photograph examples and commentary on them. This formula works very well, and as a result I shall turn to this book ahead of the two volumes produced by the Federation of Family History Societies, Dating Nineteenth Century Photographs, and the companion volume on the Twentieth Century. These latter books give fuller guidance about the history of photography, however, so to use the books together would give the best coverage.
Shrimpton's photographs leave me wanting to know more about the individuals shown, rather like family history research itself!!
