Customer Review

on 30 March 2016
I loved the opening scene of this book - it was very atmospheric. And then suddenly we are thrown back to 69 years earlier and I was really drawn in, wondering how the tale would unfold and bring us back to where we'd started. This is maybe not the usual style of book that I tend to read, but the author does a wonderful job of describing the world he is writing about. I could hear, taste and smell the medieval scenery. It was interesting to see Edward I as a young boy and man, too, when usually he features in novels as a much older man. I liked the way the story altered from the present to the past and I didn't even need to look at the dates at the top of the chapters to work out where we were because the style of writing changed and made it obvious. The book is tightly plotted and I found the characters, whilst not all likeable, very convincing. A fantastic premise for a novel, an unusual take on the medieval world and a very enjoyable read.
