This review is from: Shelley - The Complete Fifth Series [DVD] (DVD)
Those that have been following the story from Series 1 will know that James Shelley (played by Hywel Bennett) has become a husband, father and regular unemployment statistic. His life revolves around his wife, Fran (Belinda Sinclair), landlady Mrs. H (Josephine Tewson) and the officials he meets on his regular attempts to gain employment or claim income security benefit.
We now find Shelley at the start of Series 5 having been thrown out of the family home and about to move in at the seedy bedsit owned by friend Paul (Warren Clarke). Having met and taken an instant dislike to the commissionaire (Garfield Morgan), he sets about trying to reinvent himself as someone keen to work in order to impress and move back in with Fran and baby Emma.
Despite the fact that Shelley's wife and Mrs H hardly appear at all during this season, it's reassuring to see the series going from strength to strength as the main character comes to terms with his new surroundings, new circumstances and a growing list of temporary employers.
The humour is as good, if not better than in previous series and the episodes actually benefit from the variety provided by a new cast of characters and scenarios. All in all, if you've enjoyed the first four series, you're sure to enjoy this one!
