Wagner, Sometimes Better Heard Than Observed!,

This review is from: Siegfried: Metropolitan Opera (Luisi) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I've been breaking the habit of a lifetime by buying opera performances on Blu-ray recently. Its the stage setting and costumes that usually put me off. The 'Avant guard' nature of the usually bleak minimalism that passes for the standard these days irritates me no end. I wouldn't waste my money to see it for real in an opera house. This particular performance is as good as I've seen performed anywhere. Workman-like more than outstanding. The set design is intriguing as it is impressive, which is something that has to be seen to be believed. An engineering masterpiece that will leave the viewer wondering how on earth did they do that. Great theatre should be illusory, and this set design qualifies admirably. Bryn Terfel makes a wonderful Wotan. He is the reason for this purchase, and he didn't disappoint.
