This book is recommended by UNHCR as a book for helping children understand asylum/refugee issues. The 11 year olds I was working with were all really keen to read this, probably because of the manga style illustrations. However I felt the story raised lots of unanswerable questions which might help children to think a bit but needs a lot of background work to help them understand the context. It works fine as a story about making friends with someone who doesn't speak your language but i'm not sure it's helpful beyond that.
