TOP 500 REVIEWERon 5 November 2013
The first volume of 'How Britain Got The Blues' I listened to was volume 2 - How Merseyside Got The Blues - which was excellent, a really good compilation of well-chosen songs that accurately reflect the original R&B, rock and roll and early soul that influenced Merseybeat. However, this collection is much less-focussed (as the title 'Skiffle, Folk, RocknRoll & The British Blues Boom' perfectly demonstrates) with a collection of pre-war folk blues, R&B, electric Chicago blues, country and rock and roll. Although I fully accept that this was exactly how people at the time listened to music, hearing anything that was available and that the jazz, folk and blues scenes were all interlocking - I think that now in retrospect many of these tracks don't sit well together. I feel it would have been better to have kept this as a mainly acoustic collection of tracks that influenced skiffle and blues, leaving the electric tracks for the forthcoming Volume 3 - How London Got The Blues. However, needless to say there are some classic performancess here from the hugely influential Leadbelly and Robert Johnson sides to the later just as influential Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf tracks.
