4.0 out of 5 stars After all these years, still quite a terrifying watch!, 13 July 2000

This review is from: Cujo [VHS] [1983] (VHS Tape)
I first saw this film when I was quite young, already with a slight phobia of large dogs. After purchasing it again recently, the same feelings of fear washed over me again! The first 20mins of the film shows a big, friendly family dog (St. Bernard), lovable and loyal. Unfortuanatly this gentle giant gets bitten by a rabid bat, and then the trouble starts. The main character throughout the film is Donna (played by Dee Wallace), coping with marital problems whilst trying to carry on as normal for the sake of her young son Tad (Danny Pintauro). Whilst her husband leaves town on bussiness Donna takes their car to be fixed out at a farm on the edge of town, unbeknowst to her is the horrific condition of the once docile dog Cujo, and the crazed killing machine he has now become. This film does well in introducing you to the characters, but not lingering to long on their problems, but the suspenseful build-up is there. By the second half of the film the horror of the situation is clear, and I genuinely could imagine the terror I would feel in the same situation. The young boys character Tad acts out some marvellous scenes of his overwhelming fear, as he sobs uncontrollably to his mother. Well worth a watch in my view, and fairly timeless in its appeal. It will have you warily avoiding the slobbering, freindly neighbour hood mutt for a few days after!
