Still love it,
This review is from: Doghouse Reilly in Donkeys Don't Just Die (Red Fox younger fiction) (Paperback)
I already left this review for the hardback version, but as it doesn't show up for this version as well I'm re-posting it here. I think this book deserves some reviews.
I read this book when I was about ten and I loved it. Recently I acquired the book again to see if it lived up to my childhood memory's or if I had just been looking back with rose glasses. It was just as good as I remembered.
It's like Toy Story meets Raymond chandler, with a little dose of random.
I love how its a story about Toys in a room at night, but it never seems to expressly say this because to them it's just a dark and gritty neighbourhood, and that the main character isn't quite as cool as he wants to be.
The writing style isn't exactly up to the standard of Chandler but it's a kids book, and the 'reveal' in the middle isn't something you'd really get in a normal detective book either.
It has nice big words, and the pictures are part of the story (so some of the dialogue is in speech bubbles in pictures) so it's fairly fun and easy to read.
I would recommend this book any day, I think it's a work of genius.
