I recommend this film for children aged up to about 11. It is funny, exciting, sound, and it shows beautifully the Scandinavian nature (landscapes, fauna, flora and seasons are superbly magnified). The storyline makes it a heart-warming affair full of fun, adventure and good feelings, with a happy ending and the depiction of a healthy relationship between a charming pair of tweenage boy and girl. As an adult, I liked the beauty of the natural environment in this film, and I was interested in what for me was an exotic journey into the world of Scandinavian child stories, with its specific characterization, the appeal to natural elements and their relation to local mythologies. The heroes reminded me of Pippi Longstocking (from the same author) through their sense of autonomy from the adult world, their carefree attitude and their close link with nature. I hope that nobody will be shocked (children won't) by another, somehow incongruous aspect of Scandinavian culture in one scene showing briefly, with humour, some adult male nudity. The children are also inconspicuously seen bathing nude in a totally healthy, natural context and a beautifully filmed scene. The DVD I received had only German and Swedish versions. My basic German was enough to keep me through the story. I suppose that an adult will be useful to comment for children who don't understand the language.
