This review is from: ORIGIN (Audio CD)
Despite being on the ever popular Relapse label this little gem almost sneaked out unnoticed this summer. With its strength growing for the last couple of years, there was bound to be a backlash against Death Metal again in the year 2000, causing attention to focus on what many see to be the 2 bands way ahead of the pack, namely Nile and Cryptopsy. Depending on how consequent releases fair, Origin must surely be considered to be gnawing at those two's heals.
A lot is made of Cryptopsy's technicality, and yes, "And then you'll beg" is a mind contorting album, but Origin are something else. This is so unlike anything else around at the moment it WILL throw you. A crushingly heavy prodcution, OTT polyrythms liberally peppered with tangents, and truly blinding speed, with John Longstreth's (ex-Angel Corpse) drumming going way beyond jaw dropping, to jaw removing. Flo Mournier has competition, and how!
One criticism is that the album lacks variety, with the vocal patterns being too similar from track to track, despite the 3 "singing" styles on display. However, where Cryptopsy and all these, so called, "Noisecore" bands often sound too Jazzy or Hardcore-y, Origin are irrevocably Metal!!
Go on, buy this, and give it a chance. It will take you weeks to get into properly, and that must be a good thing surely? Challenging :-)
