Read this story recently with several other short stories and George R R Martin's writing really stands out. His storylines are never overly predictable (something that really bugs me with a lot of writers of both books and film). Dunk is a lowly hedge night that holds to his morals and the story explores the themes of honour, standing up for what you believe in, the effect of that your environment has on personal development and the personal impact of the people closest to you on your own character. There are a couple of nice twists and if you've read any of the Song Of Ice and Fire series then you'll certainly like this a lot. It is far more compact than his other, much much larger books and that can be refreshing sometimes. Overall a great short novelette that anyone who likes fantasy writing will enjoy. Geroge R R Martin - the current king of serious fantasy writing!
