Most of my music collection dates back to before 1980, and I rarely hear anything made since 1990 that blows me away. 'Deserter's Songs', however, did just that, so of course I couldn't wait to hear the follow up. I've had this album since not long after its release and I was so disappointed with it the first time around that I didn't listen to it again until last night. Now I know why it's been gathering dust.
The opening orchestral flourishes offer a promise that's never fulfilled. Only the beautiful 'Lincoln's Eyes' matches up to expectations, although the insistent 'Chains' is above average. Once they get past these, Mercury Rev simply plod their way downhill into the abyss of sleep. A grade A yawn.
