This review is from: Clean: A Mindspace Investigations Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
I've come across books that were worse than this. I didn't finish them. I give this two stars as I managed to finish it. Why? It was a gift, so I felt a misplaced sense of duty. This is terribly written, repetitive, plodding and plain stupid. Comparisons with Blade Runner and Chinatown are mere marketing, there is no similarity whatsoever.
To like this book you really have to be prepared to drop all critical senses and accept that police and their consultants are really, really stupid. That grittiness is all about it always being hot and people being angry, stressed or having headaches. The characterisations are shallow and simplistic cutouts from every ersatz sci-fi or cheap cop show. The inconsistencies and contradictions are so pronounced that they are insulting, the publisher couldn't even bother to edit the proof before publication.
Worst of all, it's volume 1 of a series.
I won't be reading volume 2. Have some self-respect and don't pick up volume 1.
