Clever idea taken too far,
This review is from: Jam: The Complete Series [DVD] (DVD)
As with my review of the film 'Antichrist' my feelings here are pretty much the same - in part, creative, memorable and artistic; in part shocking and gratuitous!
Imagine a series of Pythonesque sketches such as a man who visits a consultant for advice on everyday situations or a man who can't find a partner and consequently marries himself or even a TV that pours lizards all over the room. Now add dark music, bizarre camera work and some believably disturbed acting and you have a completely new concept - sketches performed more as an unnerving series of dreams, often accompanied by bizarre wordplay from Morris himself. If this was all 'Jam' is, I'd give it five stars.
However, Morris has also set out to shock. 50% of the material uses themes such as rape and child abuse, and there is also a fair bit of graphic male nudity (does anybody really want to imagine Robert Kilroy Silk in a state of undress?). Personally, I think the way the series is filmed is brilliantly disturbing in itself and it would lose none of its impact if pared down to a shorter '15 certificate' version. As it is, it will probably be remembered for all the wrong reasons.
Hmmm - deja vu!
