2.0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity - I'm out!, 29 Dec. 2012
This review is from: Dragons Den Game (Toy)
I received this game for Christmas, and, being a fan of the TV series, was looking forward to playing it.

Unfortunately, the game is rather a missed opportunity. You can see the potential in it, but the gameplay is all wrong.

Essentially the game consists of a large number of cards detailing genuine inventions and challenging you to guess whether they were successful or not. So far, so good.

Unfortunately the whole concept of the game bears little relationship to what makes the TV show so enjoyable. The key concepts of the TV show - the questioning of the inventor, the negotiation, the investing - none of them are replicated in the game.

Instead a player reads out a "pitch" from one of the cards, and then each player essentially "bets" on whether the invention was a "hit", a "flop" or a "goldmine". There is little excitement in correctly guessing that you've invested in YouTube or Autotune, because you can make just as much by guessing that an invention is a flop. The classification of the inventions as "hits" or "flops" is also rather debatable.

As if recognising that the game is lacking in fun, the creators have included "dragon cards" - events that bear absolutely no relationship to the show's concept, such as "stealing" money from other competitors or "sabotaging" other player's investments. These cards ruin what fun there is in the game as, for example, any particularly successful investment is simply "sabotaged" by another player, removing the incentive to make large investments.

For playing through a couple of times the game is fine, at least if you discard the "dragon cards", but it is disappointing that the opportunity was missed to make a game more in the spirit of the actual show.

Excellent review: we had the same thoughts. We're going to use the invention cards (its greatest strength) to make our own game!
