Cheesy story easily ignored with amazing gameplay...,
This review is from: Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation (Video Game)
In all my years of owning Playstation's and Xbox's, this is the first combat flight sim game I have ever bought. I am a big fan of Microsoft Flight Simulator; a game with I take seriously, so I was quite reluctant to buy Ace Combat 6 at first. I thought why the hell not and I'm glad i did.
First impressions weren't good for me. I was greeted with the first movie in story mode with a tea party. Then the game play started... and wow. The graphics are amazing. Fly in low over water and watch the spray shoot up behind you. Perform a high speed manoeuvre and watch the air rushing over your plane. Then there are the superb lighting effects. Lovely sunsets sit in the background of your glowing hot afterburners. Overall, you will be stunned.
I was really hoping for a full flight simulator at first. I wanted to start on the tarmac and taxi to my runway, then request take off clearance (like in the 1997 game "Joint Strike Fighter"). But i was left disappointed. However, the more you advance in the game, you can land your plane at airports and on carriers to re-supply. So its sort of ok as a flight simulator. Then you start the combat. FANTASTIC!! Each plane has its own special weapons. Some can fire multiple missiles, or quick manoeuvre missiles. You can have rockets, multiple fragment bombs, rocket launchers and many more. Or if your a true ace of aces pilot, you can hose your enemies down with machine gun fire in a proper dogfight. Its not just air targets of course. There are several different ground targets to wipe out on your flight.
The story is weird. You're flying for a made up country who speak with American accents against an enemy who speak with American /Russian /east European accents. Your wingman sounds like a little teenager with acne. Your constantly reminded to go fly with the angels (cheesy cheesy cheesy). Then a woman who is in far too much distress. However, it may seem complicated, but its not. Put short, the country with many accents invades your countries capital, you then evacuate and work your way back to win the war. My advice; press start to skip the story movies and just fly.
There are many things to unlock on this game. Different difficulty levels, new game modes, multimedia extras (whoop whoop story alert), medals and assault records. So there is a lot of things you'll be fighting for. Of course you can also unlock new aircraft, new aircraft colours and new weapons. I just wish free flight was better. You can't land or shoot anything. Its just you and your plane... which you can crash into things for fun... joy. This is a single player game on local, but there is the option of going Xbox live multiplayer. Simple concept. Shoot people down. What more could you want?
You think you have wasted your money on this game at first, but give it a chance. This game gets very very good. Just take no notice of the daft story and do not think of it as a flight simulator game. Just light your afterburners and blast your enemies with lots of fire power. Ace Combat 6 really is ace.
