This book is colourful and full of cartoonish illustrations. The chapters are called things like 'Shoreline Gang' and 'Reef Chillin'. My sense is that the author / publisher is trying to make this book 'cool' - which is a bit mortifying to be honest! My 8 year old had no problem reading the book herself - but she was quite cross that there were no photographs of the real things. I see her point - the ocean is really interesting - you don't have to make it cool - it is! I think there is plenty of information in here and if you read the whole thing you'll have a pretty good grasp of the basics - for me though, it just seems a bit condescending - the design feels as though it is aimed more at a 6 year old but the language is for older kids. In the interests of fairness I'm going to run it by my 8 and 5 yr old nieces and see what they think too... expect more soon!
