This review is from: Wilder Mann: The Image Of The Savage (Hardcover)
This book is a valuable insight into the surviving folk festivals and traditions of Europe. The photographs of the costumes themselves are stunning, and the eerie creatures and characters they represent are fascinating. There's a primal resonance to these beast and plant men that speaks of fertility and harvest superstitions and pre-Christian Pagan beliefs and rituals. On first viewing the images are allowed to speak for themselves, with descriptions given at the rear of the book for future reference.Though the format is somewhat smaller and less glossy than expected, this does not detract from the impact of the images. A worthy addition to the library of anyone interested in folklore, costume, masquerade, theatre, traditional festivals or the survival of pre-Christian archetypes into modern times.
